The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Neighbors for a Sh#t Free Sidewalk

This picture, sent by a reader, pretty much says it all:

It may not be a perfect pronunciation of the potential acronym, but how about calling the group Nassafrass? Regardless, hats off to the geniuses over Nassafrass way...

Thanks to some clever signage, there has been a decrease in dog poo in the vacant tree beds on the corner of Ocean and Lincoln as well! It sure would be nice if pet owners respected themselves and the neighborhood enough to just pick up after their pets.

It absolutely amazes me HOW MANY people don't pick up after their dogs. Last spring I actually walked around and put some free bags out. They were used...but not always. Been thinking about doing it again.

I understand that most owners are responsible dog loving people, but there are enough out there that have no idea of the commitment involved in being a parent for your animal. A dog is a 15+ year deal and unlike a child they will never be able to get up and visit the restroom by themselves. Those that don't pick up after their dogs do not even care about walking them to begin with aside from the attention they draw because of their pet. I imagine one of the only reasons they walk their dog is to avoid having shit on their own floor. Leaving your dogs excrement on the sidewalk, to me is no different than dropping your own pants and taking a crap on the sidewalk. So, until owning a dog becomes unfashionable, expect to find unpleasant surprises on your walk.

This one really nails it as a personal pet peeve! Like ElizabethC, I cannot believe the number of people who allow their dogs to crap on our sidewalks, tree and flower beds, leaving the mess for the rest of us to clean up, including those who don't even own a dog! In fact, this F-U habit has become so pervasive on Ocean Ave that I find myself gratefully thanking those who do the right thing and clean up after their dogs. What's wrong with this picture?

Speaking of pictures, I do love this sign. However, it's so effective at calling out anti-social behavior that I only worry it might have the potential to encourage some warp-minded individuals to ignore clean up even more!

Ocean ave has gotten really bad in the past year or two. I have to stare at the ground to make sure i dont step in the shit, which makes it hard to say hello to your neighbors. I may steal this idea and poat similar signs myself. The block right off of ocean ave on to Crooke is even worse.

That's so true..Crooke Ave off Ocean IS the worst. Of course, the broken glass on the ground that's been there for over a year doesn't help. (I pointed it out to the super in the building who told me it wasn't "his job" to clean the area on Crooke...only the area on Ocean)!

The super for that building is terrible as far as I can tell - for more than just his disregard for doing his job.

The dog poo has taken a turn for the worse recently on the Manor sidewalks as well. It's really noticeable. A new neighbor, a pastor at a local church recently moved here from another church, stopped me the other day and asked why there is so much dog poop on the sidewalks here, saying, "Do people just not clean up after their dogs here?" He was in disbelief.

I was walking from Crooke over to Ocean this morning and this man was walking an adorable little puppy. Cute little puppy pops a squat, poos, and the guy just walks away. The other people on the street and I were like wtf? It was in the middle of the sidewalk! Shameless.
