The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Pels Pies Company

Not their logo. Just random pic from the internets.

We've been warning you long enough...now it's time to get your pie and drink it too. Pels Pie Company, open tonight, with live music to boot.

446 Rogers
Tween Lincoln and Lefferts
Booze and Baked Goods

In other words, say goodbye to that carb-free weekday routine. Binge and Purge never felt so right.

thx to mr. plg for the tip!

So I stopped in for pie last night. Sarah and Maddie were warmly welcoming, and the apple pie was just $4, big, and super scrumptious. Lots of curated wines and beer. The espresso machine is a-comin'

Come on by and welcome them to Rogers, the new Champs Elysees of Lefferts.

We went to Pels Pies this afternoon. The place is so great for the nabe. Pie is outstanding and the vibe is even better. Could Rogers be the new Franklin Ave.???

I think Rogers has the potential.

Rogers has huge potential for dining and retail. In the process of realizing that potential, however, I'm sure that several storefront churches will be displaced. I'm not a fan of churches for a bunch of reasons, but they're the only social outlet for a lot of people.

There are a lot of "charities" and "churches" in Brooklyn where the main mission is to get income for founders. I wish we'd see people join the churches in the big, historic church buildings in dire need of reviving and increasing their tiny, aging congregations and coffers. Right now they don't have money to keep up the buildings and who knows what will happen. They'll all be turned into condos eventually because it's so costly to maintain them.

I've been told by a couple people in my wife's family that Rogers used to be hopping before they ripped out the trolley. There are a lot of dormant commercial spaces and a nice wide sidewalk on the East side of the street.

Unfortunately, there is lot of speeding and a lot of sidewalk parking which doesn't make it feel very inviting for pedestrians.

The only sidewalk parking I've seen after 10+ years of living here is by the fire house, but people do drive like maniacs on the road...

There's a shipping company that uses the sidewalk as a loading dock. Might be on the same block as the fire station.

Speaking of Rogers, does Landmark Antiques have business hours? There's never anyone there and I'd like to check out what they have in the store.

They're predominantly refurbishers, not really an antique shop. But I think I have Norbert's email if you want it.

That would be great! Feel free to email rather than post.

Re speeding on Rogers: my sense is that the introduction of the bus-only lane has slowed traffic for the most part, due to congestion. Unfortunately that same lane is now a clear path for the few who feel entitled to ignore the rules and put everyone else in peril. And since we have near zero enforcement of speeding or the no-standing hours (causing cars to zigzag back into traffic), Rogers is as dangerous as ever—or maybe worse.

On a cheerier note, best of luck to the pie bakers. Welcome to PLG — Pie Lovin' Gardens.

Beautiful space, delicious pies, great addition to the neighborhood. A must to check out

Diak, that was an apt description six months ago. Since then the NYPD has begun ticketing and towing cars in the no-standing lane and the city has started camera ticketing cars in the bus lane. Now there is general speeding in the morning and there is some insane speeding (i.e. twice the speed limit) in the afternoon when there is still an extra lane but very little traffic.

Note: There is very little speeding from 8:45 am to 9:15 am, due to congestion, but I live right off of Rogers Ave and see all it's moods. I couldn't begin to count all the car crashes I've witnessed.
