I had to Google it myself (not being a resident of southern PLG). Umma Park is the little triangle located between Ocean, Woodruff, and Caton (so not technically in PLG). Apparently, Umma means "community" in Arabic (as opposed to Uma, from the Sanskrit for flax or luminous (both of which describe Ms. Thurman pretty well), and which is one of the names of the Hindu goddess Parvati, wife of Shiva. It also means "horse" in Japanese and "nation" in Hebrew.). I rented in the South Slope starting in 1970 and when I "discovered" PLG (at the '74 house tour) I was struck by how much better this neighborhood was (cleaner, quieter, safer--yes, that's right, safer!). After all, PLG, at least in Lefferts Manor and many contiguous blocks) never deteriorated as much as Park Slope, and most of the rest of brownstone Brooklyn, had during the Depression and the post war move to the suburbs. We didn't HAVE to change as much.

Granted, PS has surpassed PLG (and most of the rest of NYC) in many respects over the generation I've lived here but, FWIW, I find myself driving to the other side of the park far less than now than 5 years ago, to eat out, buy wine, cat food, whatever.

Also, Olmstead and Vaux wouldn't agree with your second best urban park assessment of their masterpiece--Central Park was where they practiced before getting it right :-)Bob Marvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11662020602196356914noreply@blogger.com
