The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Halloween Trick or Treating Route Announced

If you're into candy, tree-lined streets and spooky costumes (like the Boostman outfit I'm planning to wear that I mentioned in my last post) you'll want to plan to enjoy the precinct-sponsored Safe Path Walk that happens each Pumpkin Day. It's such a great time for the kids, and the fact that the streets are closed to traffic makes it all the better and saferer. And if your house happens to be on the route, better stock up on Kit Kats now! (the Q's all-time favorite).

I think this may be the 16th year of the same route--at least it hasn't been changed for many years. Now I, for one, LIKE that the kids come down my block, even though it gets pretty hectic at the height of the trick or treat crush ( we must get 2--3,000 kids each year). However, some of my neighbors would like the route to be varied and I've heard some people on blocks outside the standard route complain that they get so few trick or treaters. Maybe the precinct could take a chance and be a little more creative some year. In the meantime, if anyone on a non-Halloween walk block would like to help out with candy AND some extra pairs of hands to give it out....

Hands down, the best thing going for this neighborhood (outside of the park)

I for one would love to see the route changed to those blocks outside the Manor. The problem I'm told is that the precinct is very comfortable with the central location and the fact that the big show the couple on Rutland II puts on every year is a tough act to follow. I agree, they need to be more open, and creative.

Hey other blocks, how about putting up flyers on the precinct parade route telling people to come over to your block too? We are on the parade route and get overlooked ourselves because we're the only house to give out candy on our whole end of the block. When people glance at our row of houses they either don't see our light is on or they don't make the effort to cross the street just to visit one house.
