The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Mike & Tony's - Pizza With Pizazz

Tired of the same old slices from Family, Mike's, Gino's, and that godawful place on Parkside? Dudes, gentlemen and ladies, you are SO gonna like the new joint on Flatbush at Rutland called Mike & Tony's. Now I know another pizzeria is not the fine eatery some would have hoped...but c'mon now, it's Flatbush, and we do informal very, very well.

Mike & Tony are actually the guys running the joint (in the background of picture). They're full blooded Italian-Americans with a wise-cracking sidekick (Nicky, from the old country, who at first I thought was Russian but that's because I'm a boob - he's a real Italian pizza maker), and they're here to sell you a really nice slice of pizza. The plain slice is where you learn everything you need to know - great proportions, tangy sauce, crispy crust. Even a crappy slice in NYC pizzerias is usually satisfying, so it's easy to forget how extraordinary a plain slice of NY pizza can be. It CAN be the Taj Mahal of tomatoey cheesy flatbreads.

Even better, they're serving a "Gramma Pie" too, and I tried a slice of that and it was pure heaven. Whole tomatoes, chunks of real mozzarella, leaves of basil, on a very homey crust. You gotta try it - costs a bit more but totally worth it.

So between doubles and jerk, treat yourself or your family to the Gramma pie and write me a comment if you think my rave should be a pan. C'mon! I dare you!

Had the Granny's Pie last night : it's very good, people, very good.

Yum!!! the best pizza in town. People need to get out there and check it out.

Family has always beat Gino's for me because of the sauce and I think they use better cheese, so I'll leave Gino's out. I went with the regular slice, because that is the benchmark. The crust is a bit different, but very good so that is a toss up, but once again I feel the sauce at Family's wins out. That said, Mike and Tony's had some specialty slices that looked out of control. So...I'll go to Family for my regular and when I want something extra I think I will be trying one of those "What the hell is that?" slices. I have seen this location change over more than 5 times, but I feel these guys might be sticking around for a while.

I agree with Joshua, not crazy about the cheese at Gino's. Wish we loved the pizza there but we don't. The Granny's pizza here at Mike & Tony's is excellent. Have to try the other pizzas now but also agree the specialty ones look better than the basics.

I went there last night per these reviews and just want to say that it lived up to the buzz. I got the grandma, which was great (cornmeal crust??) and he gave me a bunch of free zepolinis (I can't remember the name, fried dough things with powdered sugar) because he could tell I was curious about them. Super nice guys, really good pizza, better than the rest of the hood I think (but I will always love the Gino's around the corner on Flatbush and Linden)

also, I want to post a yelp review but can't find the biz via yelp's search...

So desperate have we been for good pizza (sorry, Gino's and Family are not good) that we dialed for delivery of a grandma moments after reading this. Have to also agree - that was one damn fine pie! Thank you Mike & Tony!!

Yeah, does anyone know what happened or whether they'll open again? I really liked this place.

I heard on the street (literally) that they were closed down by the health department (?!) which I find really surprising! I mean, that pizza was GOOD. I'm heartbroken.

Man that's a shame...it was great Pizza. Any chance they will re-open?

Health dept did not shut them down at all. whatever the rumors about them being shut is not true.. And YES real soon it will re-open again. And i hope everyone will come back and enjoy the best pizza in town. The owners want nothing but the best for their customers! LM :)

From the DoH website: Inspected 12/15/11, 13 violation points (pre-permit inspection). Inspected 2/21/12 (initial operating inspection): 48 points. Critical violations included improper temperatures for both hot and cold foods, as well as mice/evidence of mice in food and/or non-food areas. Re-inspected 3/6/12, with 44 violation points, including all the above PLUS evidence of rats/live rats. Note that a C grade is 28 points or worse, making these grades somewhere along, what, F territory?

DO NOT EAT AT THIS PLACE!!!
Twice my friend got sick after eating there. No wonder soon after he found out why.

What I will say in their defense is this. Those are old reports. They were shuttered by DoH for awhile and reopened after addressing the issues. And many new businesses struggle at first to meet the standards, since they're often dealing with problems that were left over from previous tenants. A year is a long time in the life of a restaurant. I spoke to the guys after the restaurant and they seemed sincere in their efforts to address all the issues.

That said, if the problems are persisting, and you indeed did get food poisoning from them, it's a very serious matter. You may want to ask your friend to alert them directly so that others don't get ill who don't read the blog!

Thanks for the comment.

I tried this place twice and found the pizza to be bland and cardboard like in taste! I never got sick but this is the most tasteless pizza I have had and I have had a lot of slices in NY.

My first slice went well there, but my second slice was combined with an old wet towel smell that I could not figure out if it was the table, my paper plate, or the slice. I have not been back since, but mainly because I'm a regular slice guy and think the place near Parkside has the best one around.
