The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Prince of Plumbers, Sultan of Sewers

Mark. That's his name. Here's his number: 917-662-8794 cel, 718-251-7425.

I've been using him for years now, and he's never done me wrong. He's unlike anyone you know, real Brooklyn guy, plus funny, honest, a bit tough on his sidekicks, and always willing to tell you the real poop. (sic). As with most plumbers, he does boilers too, so call him if you're worried about turning on your heat for the winter.

Recently I lost his number. And he's a lone wolf, no website or nothin', so I was thrilled when a neighbor had some "Mark the Plumber" contact info, and I assumed it was the same guy. But Mark #2 had more of a laid back demeanor, which doesn't mean he can't plumb of course, but...we were in for an unpleasant surprise. This fella's full given name is Mark Sherman, and the guy was a real bummer, nearly scared Mrs. FlatBed to death by freaking her out about how much work would be involved getting our pipes in order. Enter Mark the REAL Plumber, who set us up for a couple hundred bucks. This other dude was asking us to rip up the cement in our basement to find a leak. Turns out we just needed to snake the line, and cap an old pipe that was spilling raw sewage (ewww) that couldn't make it to the street Bcuz of the clog. End of story.

Here's the man himself, shot from below to give him an added aura. Godspeed, Mark the Plumber. Mark the REAL Plumber. You may not have the "license," but you've definitely got the goods.

Thanks for sharing! Our old plumber disappeared/retired and we needed a new guy. We have always experienced the same VAST difference in price quotes when comparing the bigger plumbing firms with the independent guys like Mark. And the big firms are always wrong in diagnosing the issue. To the point that I really started believing any plumbers with a website should be avoided.

What great information. We have two houses, one in NYC and one in Atlanta. I'll have to keep his name on file for the one in NYC. We also have the greatest Plumbers in Atlanta as well. Thanks so much for sharing this information!

I loved the title! I think having good plumbers to have best work is really a blessing and when if something goes wrong with the fault and plumber can't solve then it's not less than a nightmare.

Love the fact you added a photo of this great guy! Real plumbers are all like Mark – it’s just unfortunate that there are so many out there taking on work that they simply don’t have the skills or the experience for. I am a plumber in the UK and have been in the business for years, I have a long list of reliable plumbing professionals who give free quotes and carry out good quality work, and there are plenty of us good guys around!

First of all let me tell you, you have got a great blog. I am interested in looking for more of such topics and would like to have further information. Hope to see the next blog soon.

I had Mark come over to look at some potential work. It was a very strange experience and it cost me $30 I think just to get him to leave. He was dismissive of the work I envisioned and after taking a look at my boiler and pointing to some things done improperly told me he needed to charge me what I recall was a "consultation fee" redeemable if I gave him the work to tune up the heating system. I won't be asking him back - I'm returning to Angie's list for tradesmen.

Angie's List doesn't have the greatist reputation. IMO it's better to use the list of craftspeople on the database section of our local Yahoo Lefferts List. At least you'll know they're bona fire recommendations from your neighbors.

Hey, hey, welcome Arabic readers! Perhaps it was the word Sultan that brought your spam? Regardless, thx for your message of hope and sales.
