The folks on Maple 3 are really getting it together...why not lend them a hand on Saturday cleaning up and readying the vacant lot that they're turning into a Community Garden? It's kinda like an Old Fashioned Amish Barn Raising! Without the barn or the Amish...
The Q at Parkside
News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

It's great that they are doing this but there is the minor technical matter that the lot is privately owned... I don't think the owner has given them permission to turn it into a community garden...
What makes you think that the owner has not granted permission for the garden?
The status of the property is murky, at best. The prospect of an interminable "Bleak House" type legal proceeding to resolve the land use is unacceptable. The owner has allowed the lot to decay and deteriorate into a trah dump. If we never get to grow and pluck one tomato from the Maple Street Garden the effort and the experience will have been exceedingly worthwhile. The Block Association is getting revitalized, people are meeting their neighbors for the first time and powerful, lasting bonds are being forged. This is about growing a community, not just flowers and carrots.
Good for them for taking over this lot. The lot was a menace and so is its neglectful owner. The sidewalk was outright impassable before this effort started, with huge weeds covering the the sidewalk. I worried about getting ticks and bug bites walking through those weeds so would have to cross the road. I would volunteer but I don't even have time for my own yard.
