The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

With Your Help, Farmers Market Coming to Q At Parkside

The Petish
Lil' Help? After many conversations with the indefatigable Nancie Katz of Seeds in the Middle (check out their holistic approach to health and wellness for kids in central Brooklyn here), I'm happy to report that we're within page inches of getting a small but sweet Farmers Market (or is that Farmer's Market?) on the burgeoning Q plaza at Parkside come this spring on Friday afternoons (one whole day before Grand Army Plaza how bout THEM apples?)

We've filed the permit application but now need a host of signatures saying that the public wants the market. That's where you come in. If you print out the below form and gather ten signatures, then drop it by Play Kids or scan it and email me here, we can get the signatures into the Street Activity Permit Office by the deadline of December 31 and get ourselves a permit for every Friday from March through November 2014.

Y'all know one person can't do all that themselves, not me nor R. Delson nor any one member of the Parkside Committee. We need help, and if a few of you each take it upon themselves to gather a page worth of signatures I know we can blow 'em away, like that scene with all the letters for Santa Claus from Miracle on the 34th Street. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea.

Say, Santa coulda used a farmer's market. Few too many reindeer burgers, big guy?

Hope y'all are having a merry run up to the end of the year.

There is already a farmer's market in Metz Park at the corner of Albany Avenue and Lefferts Avenue from about May to November. Plus, there is the farmer's market at the GAP and PS154 in Windsor Terrace has a farmer's market.

You are SO RIGHT!!!

Actually I've written about the Metz one, and been to it many times and GUESS WHATTT!!!! It's run by Seeds in the Middle!!!!! Same organization!!!!

It's on Thursday. GAP on Saturday. PS154 is Sunday. And we're...FRIDAY!!!!

It makes you wonder when the farmers will have time to plant and sow!

I'm on it - Shelly will have my sheet by the end of the week.

Very excited about not having to schlep to any of those other farmers markets!

Can we also just stop by Play kids to sign? I don't have a printer or scanner but go by Play Kids often and would love a Friday market.

Answer is yes. Shelley will have a copy.

This is great news and this market is absolutely needed here. I don't understand why somebody would name the markets in totally different places as if that means we shouldn't have this one too. Friday is way better for us because weekends are too busy to shop; we never get to GAP on Saturdays. It's also much easier to shop a few blocks away from home than to try to get to Albany and Lefferts, GAP and Windsor Terrace with loads of bags. It's the exact same effort and time to take the Q to Union Square farmers market for us, honestly. Telling people to go far for the food they'd like to have for their family on a weekly basis not just special occasions increases traffic and congestion and crowding on public transportation. Walkable basic amenities is what makes a neighborhood and city livable. Thanks Q for your effort on this.

This is wonderful.
I'm for anything that decreases stress from our daily lives. That's the point Anon 11:13 Am! It's closer to home less headache and stress about whether you should take the train or a cab; how much should you carry? Or will you be able to make it home without breaking a bag? Get it Anon 11:13-it's convenient.
Again Q, thanks for improving our lives!
