The Q at Parkside
News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Now that I know I can get 50% of the fine if the dumpers are caught....illegal Dumping Watch 2012 is ON!
Why not email these photos and anecdates to Sanitation? Surely they would be embarrassed enough to respond?
Sadly, I think it would take a lot more than that :(
What about those police cameras on Flatbush? Can't they be used to bust people? It is a crime, after all.
FYI: It was passed on to me by a reliable NYPD source that a lot of the cameras on Flatbush don't even work.
I lived on this block from Dec '10-Nov '11 and that specific tree always looked like that. Remember last winter when it snowed nonstop for two months? Well when the snow finally melted, there was a trash heap UNDERNEATH it. Also, that is a TREE! Why are you putting garbage next to a tree?? Next to a trash can, while still illegal, at least would make more sense, but not a tree. This is disgusting and needs to be investigated.
I also lived near that tree from 2006-2007, it looked the exact same. Apparently, in Brooklyn and especially in this area Trees ARE Garbage Cans...
Does anyone know are we able to get trash cans in the middle of the block, not just on the corners?
Now that some of shared tips this tree is a regular dumping ground let's tell Dept of Sanitation to do a stakeout. Don't laugh -- they really will do that. It's how they catch repeat offenders in the act.
This whole scenario reinforces the dire need for a BID on our stretch of Flatbush.
What can be done to convince CAMBA or another organization to lead the effort? Would the community have to raise $$? I think it would be worth engaging CAMBA or Pratt Area about the possibility.
Skei Saulnier of PLG Civic is approaching Marty Markowitz about getting money to hire a couple Doe Fund (Ready, Willing & Able) guys to clean up for a couple years. It's a longshot, but you don't ask, you don't get.
CAMBA is probably not the right fit; BUT they have a great deal of community action and BID development experience. We should definitely talk to them.
Please keep in mind one thing: this usually grows out of concerns from the merchants themselves. Until we have committed leadership from within, with many merchants wanting to jump on board, any effort will likely fail longterm.
Additionally a BID requires the participation of a majority of the area's landlords, regardless of how the individual merchants feel. Given the absentee nature of most of the ones on Flatbush, it isn't likely that they'd go for it.
