The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

A "Sign" Of Things To Come

From neighbor and reader Bruce comes the clearest indication that, yes, the once Papa & Sons at Lincoln and Flatbush will be a "Wholesome" grocery. Whether it becomes your "go to" choice for last second vittles and "upscale" items, the sign is here:

and another view, from another reader:

Sounds like they're selling knockoff Whole Foods products. Not at knockoff prices, though, I bet.

I don't like them already. What are these huge signs? and this ridiculous red flag? (which I hope is only temporary). Haven't they heard on minimalism? especially which such a beautiful building.

Seriously Anon 9:06? This is the best looking, most modern and non-tacky signage in this neighborhood. It's a huge amount of space and the sign, hung this afternoon, looks fantastic. As does the interior. Do you prefer Papa's new, hideously loud sign ? Or all the handwritten ones around here? Or maybe the paper banners on the stores that can't be bothered to buy a proper sign? Or the light up flashing signs? Why do people commenting here always have to be so quick to knock anything that looks a little nicer or fresher than the status quo so many just accept around here.

Anon 1:44, I hope they are selling Whole Foods style foods. And if the prices are a little higher, which is doubtful, so be it. At least it's local and doesn't need to be carted back from Manhattan!

I cannot wait to start shopping here. Finally a food store that looks like it will actually have wholesome fresh foods, in PLG.

Always so much much angst about stores. Its okay to want to shop here, not shop here, like the sign, hate the sign. Its just a store. Nothing more. Never until moving to Brooklyn have I heard so much of peoples identity wrapped up in stores. Vote with your dollars. What wins is what makes money. Period.

Also if youre not accustomed to reading blogs, its good to remember that anonymous blog comments are by their nature usually unhinged. They don't reflect the attitudes of a group of people - they're just one person. If you're a regular reader of blogs, you'll know that lots of commenters are nuts. For that matter, so are many bloggers. No offense Q.

In other words, its not so serious. And its usually not person.

Anon 10:42, I am in total agreement. Everywhere else in the world people seem to just get curious about a new offering, maybe excited if it's a business they are familiar with or like at another location. The strong opinions about signs and glass facades reminds me of the hysteria in the suburb in which I grew up when an assisted living facility opened up and people were up in arms about impact on traffic. They were of course overruled and there was no impact on traffic whatsoever, predictably.

It's not that I really hate the place because of its sign.. I am just worried as there seem to be an inverse correlation between the size of a store/deli sign with the quality of its offering.

Anon 10:42, you should be more open to different opinions. The fact that someone has a different opinion than yours does not make him/her a nut.

I like the signs. A rare use of decent(ish) typography in NYC.

Anon 9:54, it's not about your "different opinion", it's the fact that you state that you dislike the place already because of its SIGN, and then your inverse correlation theory. You sound crazy, period.

Well "Me said..." you sound dull, boring, humorless and sad.

Interesting - I think that the signs look very nice in place. The building shines and stands out far more than it does before. The signs certainly don't overtake the building. I'm actually curious if the poster who dislikes the signage has seen it in person. The name has not impressed me, but actually looks nice up on those fancy flags and simple signage. They are even fixing cracks in the facade.

The photo makes the sign look much bigger than it actually is. When I walked by today, I thought it looked perfectly fine and certainly not oversized or ugly. I'm excited to finally have a place to occasionally buy "fancy" groceries without having to plan my shopping far in advance to coincide with when I'll be in other neighborhoods.

It is not a hair joint or another fast food joint. Therefore I am happy.
