Hmmm. New windows for Phats? An eagle-eyed reader popped this picture and noted the construction permit covers the first and second floors of this southern portion of the building.
Then the Q checked in with Albert Srour, owner of the one-time bakery itself, and guess what? He confirmed that Planet Fitness will be moving in, taking over at least the second floor of this two-story part of the building.
No more excuses. You MUST get in shape by next summer...
AND Albert just added that he'd like to see a nice restaurant open in up in the building. Wonder where? As of yet he has no plan to shut down his namesake store. But...
C'mon, there's gotta be a Brooklyn investor/restauranteur who could make it worth his while. Anyone? Btw, if you're initials are T.G.I.F. or your last name is Appleby? The place is already rented, sorry,
The Q at Parkside
News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

I thought Albert bought the building after the bakery closed. He paid the city almost nothing for it...
Yes. The language of my post was unclear. I've changed it from "owner of the old bakery itself" to owner of the "one-time" bakery. Albert is, in fact, the Albert half-referenced in the store. The other half, or rather other 3/4, is the portly animated Bill Cosby character.
Is the store closing?
Not yet. He did tell me he wants a "nice restaurant" or something to move in there.
How about Beer Garden? Call it, the Botanic Beer Garden?
I think I just fainted. CFB, are you serious?
YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
The joy that this post and at least one of the comments has given me - even if only as a hint of things to come - is great.
It's from the man himself...
Phit Alberts.
Now all we need is for Trader Joe's to set up shop in this building!!
I second the TJ option. A beer garden would be a great second option. Space is too large for a restaurant unless they did a portion of the first floor.
This is across from the Prospect Park Q station not the Parkside ave station.
still good news.
Good news on the gym, that's a business everybody has yearned for. Things are getting checked off the wish list. Nice. Phat Albert store actually used to be decent with some nicer clothes at cheap prices. The first year we lived here they had cashmere mens sweaters and designer jeans (real ones normally priced $200) for $10 each. Now it's all really crappy cheap clothes overpriced. At Christmas time they create a huge toy dept and it's good. We've acquired Santa gifts a few years in a row there.

dallas bbqs would be perfect for that large space. q, have you seen halloween store at caton and flatbush?
What happened to the yoga studio?
The hot yoga studio and Ifetayo are going to be in a different building. The beer distributor/pawn shop are part of a separate property owned by someone else. The defunct car wash separates them.
The community should get on changing the zoning lickedy split as to pique interest in knocking down the car wash and building something residential with commercial space.
Gah! Why always residential? MOAR COMMERCIAL!
ALSO: Stop it, Prospect Park Q. Until you open a blog for those of us at that station, this is the blog for PLG.
No residential in the Phat Albert block of buildings, agreed, keep that commercial. The spot we should focus on bringing a residential building is where the Wendy's sits. Stunning views of garden and park. Close to bus and subway.
What is wrong with mixed use where there is currently no use, eg car wash?
Agreed. These policy prescriptions from the cheap seats (i.e. anonymous postings) seem pretty short-sighted. Now that capital is flowing again, it's time for Albert to think a bit bigger. It's been Rusty Filthy O'Clock on that giant timepiece for way too long.
Please no Dallas BBQ. That chain is just awful. If you want bbq at least go for something more authentic. Also, any construction involving the car wash site would involve EXTENSIVE environmental remediation due to the years of oil changes, etc., there - sure that's a big turn off for many.
Just an FYI everyone: there is no Dallas BBQ in Dallas, TX. Folks there wouldn't go near it. Bleh!

Babs: If there's that much oil on the premises, why not just cut out the middleman and build an Olive Garden?
I Just wish Trader would consider setting-up chop here. How can we convince them to consider our hood?
to Babs - Several gas stations and auto repair shops in Prospect Heights have become residential developments, so maybe there's hope!
to Rose - go onto their website and make a request. I've done so in the past, if they get enough suggestions they might consider it. Also, troll through linkdn and see if you have any distant connections to their location scouts - you never know.
Rose and Anon 9:40.,
I emailed Trader Joe's and asked them about it. They said they have no plans to expand in this area and are forwarding it to their Real Estate Department for future consideration. I hoping if they get many requests they may consider it.

any idea when the planet fitness is supposed to open up?
We should be able to get a restaurant, Trader Joe's, or other good commercial operations interested on the strength of the opening of Lakeside, which will bring large numbers of people to the area.
if you want to go to trader joes. to downtown brooklyn and live there. i'm upset it took gentrification for developers to come to a community where an affordable gym is needed. i hate what brooklyn has become. a land for white privilege.
btw stop bashing phat albert. it's probably one of the only affordable places left in the area.
