The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Jaywalkers Take Heed

In yet another sign of vigilance to come, the 71st has issued an unambiguous statement on jaywalking, though it mysterious chooses not to name it as such. Let this be a warning...other precincts are cracking down, and we may be next. And let me tell you those little pink tickets are super-annoying. You have to go to Red Hook and get lectured about being a better community member. Trust me. I've been twice!

As a frequent car driver I can attest to flat-out stupidity and obliviousness of many pedestrians. It's truly a wonder there aren't more casualties.

But hasn't the consensus in these parts been that far and away the biggest problem is the reckless and lawless behavior of drivers? Dollar vans especially? And this is the 71st's response?

What's next? A rash of burglaries... the 71st advises residents to stop owning things. A spate of shootings... the 71st reminds residents that staying indoors is the best deterrent to getting shot.

While I am using not a defender of the 71st, the anti-jaywalking campaign seems to be coming directly from DiBlasio. I don't believe that this is where the 71st (or any other precinct) wants to be dedicating their efforts.

Too bad the 71st can't take a hint from the 78th, which has targeted unsafe driving, a much bigger threat to us than jaywalking.

I've seen dollar vans almost kill people. But I've never seen one get a ticket. Good thing they're going after pedestrians. Good call. Well played.

I actually saw a dollar van pulled over the other day. The 71st says that with the support of TLC they plan to crack down on the illegal dollar vans and reckless driving. We'll see...
