The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

It's Tongue's Time To Shine

Hey, I googled it, I can honestly say that the phrase in the above title has never been used before on the internet! But it is SO apropos! On Tuesday at 9:30 am, if you're unemployed, a swingshifter, retired, out of school, a member of the "creative-class," a caregiver, a homemaker, on break, taking the day off, ill, or all of the above, head on over to Tip of the Tongue a/k/a TotT for some opening day goodies. The shoppe will be open starting May 28 with abbreviated soft-launch hours from 9:30 - 3:30 through Saturday the 1st. Regular hours will be: M-F 7-7 and S-S 8-7. Some folks have asked so's I'll tells you. This is primarily a coffee and pastry kinda place not a take-away lunch/dinner sort of thing so don't be disappointed thinking you can come in and get say a tongue sandwich. I made that joke and someone's face lit up and then I felt really bad. And also in terms of the way people used to be so down on the neighborhood and there being no good coffee places? Like, seriously, like in two days we'll have two awesome places within like a block of one another. Like, wow.

BUT. And this is a very BIG butt. This Sunday marks the start of weekend hours at TotT BECAUSE it's ye olde Lefferts Gardens House Tour, and if you stop in you have a ticket, you get a free brownie. Word.

I just went. They've done the space up beautifully, all reclaimed wood and stenciled wallpaper. really great latte and croissant. I think the place is going to do very well. Every person who came in was looking around all slack-jawed like they'd just entered the Emerald City.

So people, what are we going to call this place? Tip of the Tongue doesn't exactly roll of the tongue. Tongue? Gross. TotT? Tips? Doesn't really say anything, so people won't know what you mean. My vote is for either "Baked and Brewed" or better, "K-Dog." K-Dog is easy to say and everyone will know what you mean, but I can understand if some people find that akin to naming your new pony after your recently deceased pony. Votes?

How about we call it Tip of the Tongue...

or you start your own business and come up with your own name?

nice one, mean man. i like short, so i'm trying tip or tott. k-dog is really, really weird. but hey, if you can make it stick...i can't see the owners thinking that's very clever however...or very thoughtful.

Tip-o-To? [tip-oh-toh]

Tongue is a little much (esp since the Q has already conjured up images to tongue sandwiches, clearly far from coffee/pastry fare), but it's not like trendy coffeeshops are really into naming themselves after anything remotely having to do with coffee: Tugboat, lark, Steeplechase, brooklyn commune. At least the naming crew at Cafe Madeline got it clear. Looking forward to trying out TOT's wares soon though. Best of luck TOT crew!

Call it the T. Easy to recall. Easy to spell. Easy to say.

How hard is your life that you can't call it Tip of the Tongue?

I wouldn't say that it would make my life "hard", per se, but it would sure make me feel silly. "Top O'the morning to you, I"m off to the Tip of the Tongue for a wee spot o cafe!"

I'm going with "T". Just T.

I am prepared to slam that Japanese Iced coffee though.

Tips. The servers would certainly appreciate it.

I'm going to call it "Tots" just to annoy those of you who seem to think that one needs to call a business by its proper name or "open their own".

Totes down for Tots!

I meant slam that coffee in a good way, as in slam it down my throat.

i'm going to take the brooklyn queens expressway over to franklin delano roosevelt drive and then maybe i'll cut over to that cute little neighborhood south of houston street. won't you care to join me, start-your-own-business guy?

personally, i like tipsies, or maybe tips (nice one, the snob). i like tots too, but it reminds me too much of tater tots, which are the exact opposite of coffee i think.

btw, i just stopped in, and it's fantastic. and i'm not just talking about the decor. bought me some fresh bread, a pretzel roll, and a buttery ginger scone -- all of which were oh-so-good. congrats tipsies!

start-your-own-business guy? I am a woman for the two people who assumed I am a man.

Anyhow, why so obsessed with what other people name a biz? It's odd and somehow screams insecurity or boredom... depression, maybe? Nicknames happen in time if there is a reason, demand, inspiration... brainstorming on a blog prior to a full opening regarding a shortened name is odd.

People think they own neighbhorhood bizs here. I never seen anything like it.

Wow, start-your-own-business-lady, people are just excited there's a new cool spot in our hood and are having fun with it. If they were having this conversation and joking around on the street corner would you walk up and scold them too? This is how the internet works. The Q blog is part of our community and a place where people sometimes chitchat. The only person here who's acting like they own the neighborhood is you. Everyone else is just having fun. Smile!

I wouldn't assume that "Start Your Own Business" is in any way affiliated with Tips/Tip's/TotT/Tipsy. Just another person sharing her opinion. And that's what we're all doing, so it's all good.

I just visited this establishment with my friendly neighbor. It looks amazing, the water with cucumber/lemon was fantastic. And the iced latte was perfection. The staff was super nice. However... both my friend and I agreed we would simply refer to it in the future as "TOTT-Z".

Oh I remember MY first silly meandering mindless blog comment thread. The nerve! The thoughtlessness! I was furious. Where could I turn? Then I got even. I started my own blog! Then I could be mindless, thoughtless, nervous and furious all at the same time and put a title and picture on it too!! What a country! What an internet! That's INTERNET country!
