The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

"Play For Peace" - Next Wednesday October 9

If you're tired of hearing gunshots, and tired of the same tired blah blah blah about it, come out to the Parkside Playground next Wednesday October 9 (raindate Oct 10) for a Playdate. The more folks, young-old-whatever that come, the more we can show our solidarity. More security, more engagement, more programs, more gang prevention. More leadership, please.

And here's the poster/flyer from generous and talented neighbor Karen Oh.

Mr. Eugene's friend who's on this blog-could you pass this to him? Maybe this will give him an idea on how to handle the gang related activities and shootings taking place-in our park-which happens to be located (near PS92, an elementary school.)
If he didn't know!

As the new commanding officer, Lenz told locals, who packed into the meeting at the Miccio Center, that Carroll Park was one of the first places he had visited in the neighborhood.

He assured the troubled residents that cops would be stationed at the park from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and plainclothes officers would also be monitoring the area.

The park is located between Court, Smith, Carroll and President streets, just across the street from pre-K and elementary school P.S. 58 at 330 Smith St.

“It’s definitely something on my agenda,” said Lenz, who has been a member of the police department for 23 years.

Rose,

I read about the response to the Carroll Gardens shooting, police officer stationed etc. We've had far more incidents and the response to PLG is a meager "we'll see what we can do"
Why the difference in response? Is it the population?

Interestingly, that's our commander Lewis's old precinct.

The answer, according to officials, is that we're a much more "active' precinct and therefore there's less resources to go around, given all the crime.

This "Play for Peace" thing is, in part, to get the powers-the-be to rectify that imbalance.

In the meantime, before the 9th, maybe people who are run out of the park could video tape the kids or take some pictures?

Rose: The commander of the 71st was head of that precinct, oddly enough.

The only thing that can be said in defense of the 71st is that it has WAY more on its hands than the 76th. I don't know how the personnel numbers breakdown, but the 76th (Red Hook and Carrol Gardens) has had one (yes 1) shooting this year vs 10 last year at this time, according to Compstat. Overall, there are three times more crimes in the 71st.

And this event isn't meant just for kids and their parents. It's for everyone to come and hang out. We need numbers in order to make some noise. Don't be shy. If you are, bring a book. Or your iPad. Or your knitting. And if you're into yoga bring your mat. And if you like hopscotch bring your chalk. And if you like cheese sticks, well doggone it bring your cheese sticks.

I agree with Clarkson FlatBed...I do think (in the defense of the 71st) that they don't have the resources and support to manage all of the criminal issues and civilian complaints in the neighborhood.

If we can get enough people out on the 9th, and media (invite who you know folks in the media), then maybe we can get Brooklyn South and Central NYPD to allocate more cops and resources to the 71st and hopefully even 70th precincts.

So please come out, come play, invite everyone you know who supports this community, and let's get some peaceful attention.

Polite Question: Would someone be able to print out a dozen posters promoting this event, and tape them up on Winthrop & Parkside &ct? A few neighbors who aren't online were saying that they had not heard of this event, want to be a part, feel left out, etc.

(Would totally volunteer to post the signs myself, but I'm just not around Monday or Tuesday to do it.)

I will post some tomorrow.

Put some posters up tonight. It always feels like a fools errand, because I almost never hear that people heard about something through and 8 1/2" posted flyer! Still, there's a huge informational divide in this neighborhood...

Eric Adams is blasting it. I asked for Lindiwe Kaumau and Saundra Thomas's help. Told Sylvia Kinard about it when we had lunch, she thought she could broadcast. The schools are being reached, incl 92 and LGCS. Pavani is kicking butt. Don't know how much more we can do. If you don't see the poster, don't read about online, don't run in circles that are talking about it...I think Mr. Delson knows what I'm talking about...it's tough.

We had a wild year on Clarkson. Two block parties and some tragedy in between. All the time folks say "I didn't hear about it" referring to meetings and such; as if we were supposed to knock on their doors and invite them personally. This after posters, phone calls, emails...

We'll do our best. And I encourage everyone who can to print out a few and post them in your building, on your corner...pass a few out to folks who might be interested. With so many people affected by recent events, it would be awesome to reach them all. That's the ideal...

Q, I'm not sure anyone knows who "Mr. Delson" is. But, thank you, and thanks, Mom!

I posted flyers on Parkside and Winthrop, handed some to people personally, left some at the Early Childood center and PS 92. A super and the laundromat on Rogers let me put it up inside their building. Interestingly enough a lot of people were not aware of the shootings.
