The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Lefferts Blotter

Fearless Crime Fighting Duo Nicole "On-It" Fabri and Vinnie "The Man" Martinos comes through once again, this time with two and a half months worth of police blotter. Remember, this is culled from the wider 71st precinct, and they compile it by hand, so there's always a chance for human error. But you'll find these reports are pretty darn accurate for the nabe typically called Lefferts (a/k/a Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, PLG, NE Flatbush, West Pigtown, Prospect Park East). I'm still holding out hope that someone will contact the 70th and do the same. And awaaaaaaaaaaay we go...

This Cat Needs You

Currently starving on Winthrop tween Nos & Bed
This little gal is skinny but getting fed by a local Samaritan. She loves being held, which means she's most definitely a throw-away, not a feral kitty. Our local hero would love to take her in, but her building won't allow pets.

If you respond to this ad, I'll hook you up with the current caretaker and you can go out and see for yourself. Email me here. Despite the balmy weather, winter's just around the corner, and a domestic cat won't last long on the streets. Without a new people-parent, she'll be road splatter or get torn up by a wild one, so this is your big chance to change this critter's life for good!

"Play For Peace" - Next Wednesday October 9

If you're tired of hearing gunshots, and tired of the same tired blah blah blah about it, come out to the Parkside Playground next Wednesday October 9 (raindate Oct 10) for a Playdate. The more folks, young-old-whatever that come, the more we can show our solidarity. More security, more engagement, more programs, more gang prevention. More leadership, please.

And here's the poster/flyer from generous and talented neighbor Karen Oh.

Maple Street Community Garden - the Place to Be this Sunday

Time to sign up for you FREE tree. That's right...sign up before they run out here: Pick 'em up at 11am, but be sure to reserve! This Sunday!

Then learn about vertical palette planters with Sustainable Flatbush. Info here.

If you haven't visited the Maple III garden, dang if it ain't impressive. So go!

psst...don't tell anyone

Here's the local Page 6 411:

The Q has gotten word that a certain Councilman showed up yesterday afternoon to survey the Parkside Playground. To our knowledge this is the first time he has taken seriously neighborhood complaints about the condition of the p-ground. Thanks to local vigilantes, the plantings have been cared for and the swings replaced. The Q welcomes all the help we can get, and I for one am glad he took our press release about the upcoming October 9 "Play for Peace" event seriously.

Also, the Lenox Block Association meeting is happening tonight, and guess who's coming to dinner? Right. First time for everything. His long-shot opponent is showing up too. Sparks? I look forward to hearing what goes down!

Is this a sign of a new chapter in local politics? Let's hope so. There's no hard feelings on this side of the blog, though I know a political dogfight gets heated sometimes, and to those who so vehemently hate me I ask that you remember that any citizen and resident is allowed to run in an election, and we are all compelled to choose and support any candidate we feel is most qualified. It remains to be seen whether this new interest is a passing phase related to the upcoming election.

Which...is still happening in November. Remember, Syliva Kinard who won more than 10% of the primary vote is on the ballot on the "Rent Is Too Damn High," recently changed to juxg "Rent" party line. Feel free to cast your vote accordingly. I'm meeting with Ms. Kinard today and will be glad to update you on her plans for the district.

Which...I just thought I'd pass on what I've heard from the Council Member the last two times I've heard him speak. In a (brilliant?) twist of an old canard (huh? like that I found a way to use that homophones? Come on, give it up!), Mr. Eugene has said that

"after the election I will unveil my plan, a vision for the neighborhood."

AFTER the election. I really don't know how to respond, but if you're like me, I love surprises!

"Hmm, Monty. I'll take what's behind curtain number 2 please!"

CSA On Its Way - Deadline Oct 11

More Pix of 626

Can't get enough of renderings? These drawings of the coming 626 Flatbush are from the developer, and include a bit more detail. Some folks were wondering about that "street" next to the building. Looks like a parking and service entrance to me.

Do Your Duty! Vote For Tish James

If you like your public advocate to be feisty, smart and sure of herself and her ideals, which may very well resemble YOUR ideals, then vote today in the runoff for Public Advocate. Sure it's costing $13 million for this one office that almost no one understads and whose entire budget is like $2.5 million. But that means your vote is worth THAT MUCH MORE! Your vote could be worth, I dunno, $100 or something like that, if 130,000 people vote. That's right. In order for you to vote today, it will cost about $100 for you to do so.

But the cost of not voting? Umm. I'm not sure I can make an equation out of that one. Infinite money! It costs infinite money for you not to vote.

So vote. Vote for James. Tish covered the 35th Council District down to Empire, so at least you know she'll know your neck of the woods. I had breakfast with her early last year. It was cool; she's funny, tough as nails, smarts like a kick in the shins. I won't tell you what we talked about, but I will tell you I had a bagel. And we went Dutch in honor of the City's colonial heritage.

Flatbush Corridor Finally Gets a Fix

Since first skipping down Flatbush Ave from the Garden in 1989, and driving my Mazda GLC along its bumpy rue, I've been amazed that no DOT brainiac has seen a need to bother sluicing its plumbing and regulating its anarchy. Accidents and slowdowns and the near video game frenzy of dollar vans have been the norm for, I dunno, maybe back to the days of the Dutch, or at the very least to the golden age of the Dodgers and dodging from trolleys.

After last night's forum at Erasmus, we can finally expect the changes that the Q and many others have been advocating for years to be implemented. Check out this nifty visual aid printed in the Daily News article today:

Finally an acknowledgment, as my own measuring by footsteps will attest, there is simply not room for three lanes each direction. Other cities like Seattle would never dream of such insanity. In my post from last year on the topic, I noted that the prescription on Parkside from the Tennis Bubble is working swimmingly. There's even room for a bike to ride by the parked cars, provided the rider be on his guard for the opening of doors.

Ever noticed how Olde Good Things parks its truck along Parkside near the Parade Ground? If you haven't read this post about the CoBU Cult on Woodruff, that's a fair enough segue don't you think? That's probably my favorite Q scoop, and alls I hads to do was Google the address. Amazing what turns up when the hours from 11pm to 12am are spent on the ol' Toshiba.

I wonder how "to Google" conjugates in French. Nous Googlons? Googlez Vous?
