The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Um...

This is the part where I ask you, gentle readers, to identify what might be ill-advised about this fundraiser for one of the four primary challengers to Councilman Eugene. As a fundraiser by day myself, and someone who very much respects work on behalf of indigent clients, I feel I must disqualify myself from critique, no matter how glaring. Anyone want to chime in? Free beef patty from Jamaican Pride for the first correct response. (or veggie if you're vegetarian; chicken if you're Hindu; gluten-free slice of toast without butter available as substitution.)

I'm struck by her naming the contribution levels by neighborhood (rather than the usual "Friend," "Patron," etc.).
And PLG is the lowest level—guess she already sees us as the poor relations....

Maybe I need to create tougher quizzes...

Or perhaps I should ask you to pose it as a question, a la Jeopardy?

Eighteen minutes too late to win. Truly I've lost the 'Ditmas Park is Flatbush' battle.

Plus Hamilton's is in District 39 but that's small potatoes compared to "here's how I (don't) value your neighborhood."

I'd like to contribute seventeen cents and a couple of returnable cans.
(Contribution level: "Garbage-strewn tree pit on Flatbush Ave.")

Way to guarantee "representation" by Eugene for another 100 years.

She's white and Jewish. She hasn't got a chance. It's an off-year election. Stumble-bum Eugene can phone it in. He'll round up his usual cadre of illegal immigrant voters who will gladly cast their votes for him in exchange for the usual favors.

District 40 demographics are shifting, not that it matters. In 2000, the district was 6 percent white. In 2010 it was 10 percent white. Now it might be 15 percent white. The black population has declined. Was 70 percent in 2000. Down to 65 percent in 2010. Now, probably 60 percent.

Still, the lop-sided imbalance guarantees that only a black candidate can win. Things will remain that way for years to come. It will take a few decades of demographic change before a white candidate has a shot in this district.

Duh. PLG is ghetto. Everyone knows that. It will never be as great and bougie as the slope....
