The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Councilman Mathieu Eugene Agrees to Interview

RESCHEDULED FOR APRIL 8 at 10AM!

After a couple of tries, I'll be heading to Councilman Eugene's office on March 24 for a tête-à-tête (I'm practicing my French!) with the first-ever Haitian-American to hold a seat on said council.
I'll ask him all manner of things, but I'd love it if you'd send me ideas for questions relevant to our neck of his district. As always, I'm at

timothyjamesthomas@gmail.com.

To learn more about Eugene and his "accomplishments," please check out this nifty Wiki for council people: Councilpedia.

And in case you hadn't noticed, we had a winner in the name that chicken joint competition! It was in fact KANSAS Fried Chicken that once graced the most awesome location, location, location -- the triangular slab formed by Flatbush and Fulton.

Please at least get his name right before you go - it's Mathieu Eugene (Eugene is his last name).

Questions: What efforts has he made to improve communication with his constituents? Some City Councilmembers, like Tish James, have blogs, Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts, as does City Council President Christine Quinn. Many others send out regular e-mail newsletters, even to people not in their district (I receive them from Brad Lander and Steve Levin, among others). Meanwhile, all we get from Eugene is the occasional snail-mail update.

2. What has he done/is he planning to do to address the great need for affordable housing in this area, particularly among the elderly?

3. What about a community center for the neighborhood?

Bonne chance!
