The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. MORE UPDATES on Apr 11: Murder on Hawthorne - ARREST MADE

From the 71st Precinct:

Today at approximately 1230 PM a male black was shot multiple times as he sat in his van in front of 265 Hawthorne Street. The victim attempted to drive away hitting several parked cars and collapsing in the drivers seat. The victim was pronounced DOA at the scene. Anyone with information please call the 71 Precinct Detective at-735-0501.

That's Hawthorne between Rogers and Nostrand. Details as they emerge.

As of April 10th, 4PM, from the 71st:

Today at approximately 4 PM the 71 Precinct Detective Unit arrested four individuals who are responsible  for the homicide yesterday on Hawthorne Street.

As of April 10th, 5PM from Vinnie at 71st via text:

Turns out three of the guys lived on the block. One was from Rockway.

As of April 10th, 6PM

I walked down that block of Hawthorne. I'd forgotten how bleak it was on the east end towards Nostrand - vacant lots and all. The building where the murder took place still had a few roughs hanging out. Cops were marching up and down Nostrand. And the cherry picker "tower" that the NYPD brings out when it really wants a hot spot to cool down? They were just setting it up:

And now this article from DNA suggests...oh well, you can read it yourself. It all seems like insanity to me.

The police seem pretty good at catching these people. It's a shame they have to wait until these people actually kill someone before they're put away for a long time.

To the commenter who just posted. You broke my community standard by using personal attack and profanity. You had a point to make. If you can make it without the language and anger, I'm happy to let it stand.

Another news item on the killing.

A dispiriting stat: by this point last year there there were no murders in the 71. There have been four so far this year. It's a very big precinct, geographically, but this is not welcome news at all.

I live on Hawthorne and avoid going past Rodgers like the plague.

The vacant lots, some of the homes in severe disrepair, overgrown...

Nostrand is not a good avenue, period. I wish that part could be of another neighborhood and not PLG but oh well. Just makes our nabe look bad, sheesh.

That's a pretty blanket statement, Anon 10:20. There are lots of great shops, so I suspect you are talking about crime or sanitation or violence or some other measuring stick? Heck, my dentist is on Nostrand. Lindiwe's pottery shop is on Nostrand. Culpeppers is on Nostrand. Allan's bakery. La Baguette. Art Nouveau.

I totally prefer Nostrand to Flatbush - much less riff-raff and more normal people. Love all the shops/restos you mention Q, and let me add that I love Tony's Meat Market on the corner of Lefferts and Nostrand - they grind their hamburger to order and also have lots of other fresh meats for all you non vegetarians out there. Also Hammond's jerk chicken. Please maybe do a story on Art Nouveau (I know it's a bit north for you) - it's got to be one of the most intriguing shops around and I want to know more!
