The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Latest Q Tip from Parkside

Interesting. From Rudy came word that someone finally came and trimmed the trees on the south side of Parkside, and that the bag that had been there since at least 2008 finally came down. I put his picture up, meaning to post on it, got distracted and rode to work, then came back to the post to find that people had already commented on it. One person had gone so far as to get all angry-like. Well, Mr. Mad Man, my post was actually going to be a good news story about things taking a turn for the better. Although it appears that Maverick Comics is closing. As they sing in Fiddler on the Roof, "Sunrise, Sunset..."

Not sure what the point of this photo is for, unless its something artistic to ponder at. If it's to show what a sh*thole our neighborhood is, well that was not necessary. Anybody can walk down Flatbush and Nostrand and look at all the garbage strewn about like we are living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. But advertising this issue on a blog like this is bad PR and perpetuates the bad image everyone living in more gentrified hoods have about PLG. And that's not good for real estate value in the Manor!

Hey, anonymous, by saying stuff like "But advertising this issue on a blog like this is bad PR and perpetuates the bad image everyone living in more gentrified hoods have about PLG", you are acknowledging and perpetuating the bad image.

Now who can figure out how to get someone up in the tree and remove this? It looks like it's been there for a while.

There are a bunch of folks who intend on destroying PLG...they spend a whole lot of time trying to divide and disparage our community, by calling out different ethnic groups negatively and criticizing everything in the community. They bitch at everything and have made no attempt to do anything positive in the community. Anon , 8:55 you are one of them...just move if you are so dam disgusted with the community, so we can be rid of your constant negative and divisive comments...Like disco Princess said, "climb the dam tree and take the piece of garbage down... Tim probably noticed it on his way to work and is hoping one of us climb the tree and remove it by time he gets back home.

I can't figure out if 8:55's post is satire or what. But actually yes, the old approach was always to deny anything was wrong or different, even what could be seen by all in plain sight. Cheryl, I admire the newcomers who get annoyed and complain about the obvious because they are the ones finally organizing cleanups and pressuring businesses to clean their sidewalks and harassing sanitation so they stop neglecting our neighborhood. Sometimes it takes a malcontent to accomplish those things.

Q, may I tell the good people of Lefferts what this is a photograph of?

by all means, and I'll kick it up to the post itself.

This looks like the remains of plastic bags/wrap tangled in a tree.

I tried doing a Google search to see which city agency can have that removed from a tree (this is assuming the tree is on city property). It's challenging to find a clear answer.

No one is denying that there is a problem. One can point out the problem without sniping that it looks like we're living in a third world country.

I wonder if there are any psychology folks who can comment or set up an experiment based on people's immediate overreactions to everything that goes up here. Pretty hysterical.

Too bad about the comic store. I just really noticed it for the first time the other night because there was a group of stereotypically nerdy looking teens outside having a tense discussion, which I could not overhear, but I assume it involved the new Red Hook hipster superhero comic that is set to debut soon. I will have to check it out before it is gone.

an opportune time to share one of my favorites from the great Ian Frazier. "Bags in Trees: A Restrospective" http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2004/01/12/040112fa_fact_frazier

Perhaps Ian Frazier can do call-back to share his feelings about the spontaneous generation of yogurt shops around the city.

Unfortunately, he's probably missed the proliferation. Something tells me he lives in New Jersey these days.

Saw this as I was leaving for work today... my one question is whether or not they took care of the dead branches overhanging the vacant lot.

Um, our little section of heaven is MUCH cleaner than Port-au-prince, FYI. Plus...we can drink the water! And we have, you know, real toilets. But I digress.

Say it ain't so about Maverick!

Also, I believe that is a blonde weave.
