This Just In...
A trusted source says that the DOT has finished a proposal to create bike lanes on Flatbush between Empire and GAP that sidesteps controversy and elevates common sense to its proper spot atop the urban pancake like so many pats of delicious butter...
It's gonna run along the Botanic Garden side, avoiding a fight with drivers over use of those precious parking and driving lanes. The move was announced at last night's Prospect Park Community Council meeting. Remember, they still have to present to the community, so you'll have plenty of chances to bitch and moan.
I have no pictures of the project, but I did receive some good news, first reported by Breitbart, about the new Food Truck coming to the recently announced joint venture between British Petroleum and Borough President Eric Adams at the triangle of Flatbush/Washington/Lefforts to be unveiled and rebranded as the BP Plaza: Rendering of said food truck below (Balloon Rides to be provided by Phat Albert, with hot air provided by soon-to-be-outgoing Council Member Mathieu Eugene):
The Q at Parkside
News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

The BBG sidewalk was the logical location for the paths. Now where will they put the paths that will connect the FB/Empire intersection to Parkside? Ocean and Flatbush are less forgiving locations for a bike path.
anon 2:59 correctly identifies the weak link in the network. Ocean Avenue south of Parkside has a Class 2 lane, albeit one that is almost always blocked by double-parked cars.
I hope this works out.
But also curious how common it is to have a sidewalk with no option for foot traffic on this side of the street. Maybe that's just fine? But it strikes me as unusual.
No one has said that pedestrians won't be allowed! Look at Eastern Parkway...one lane for bikes and one for walkers. I assume that's the way it'll go...think Brooklyn Bridge walk/bike lanes!
Brooklyn Bridge lanes are universally regarded as an epic disaster.
They're going to need 2 lanes for bikes. What I'm skeptical about is whether there is additional room for a pedestrian lane. You've got trees on either side of the sidewalk here. It's not as wide as Eastern Parkway.
It won't be as busy as the Brooklyn Bridge. Having (illegally) ridden that sidewalk on the BBG for years, I assure you the road will primarily belong to the bikes. Not many people choose to walk that long road, and if they do want to avoid bikes, there's the Zoo side.
There is so little pedestrian traffic on that side... who cares.
a parks employee told me that the plan involved 'reclaiming' some of the area of the park for the sidewalk. i.e. moving the fence into the park a few feet. i thought that seemed like a good idea since the current fence is basically a rusted pile of sticks at this point
ok but moving the fence doesn't mean moving trees planted between the sidewalk and the fence.
