The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Ali's Roti & Hookah Bar Respond To the Neighborhood

The background to the story is that a pretty angry flier went out (see end of this post) that accused the new Hookah Lounge at Ali's Roti Shop of being bullies and jerks, and yes, being too loud too late into the night (a reasonable concern). The response from Johnny & Orlando, also a flier, went up in their window. It reads:

thx Mark S. for the pic!

I think the flier above and the one below say what needs to be said. Let's get along. Let's talk to each other. And when THAT doesn't work, there's always the law.

Not sure who took this one. Write me to claim it!

I walked by at around 1am a few weeks ago and it was noisy. The bouncer and a lady friend were loudly flirting- TMI.

Then this morning around 8:15am, I walked by and there was still loud music playing and what looked like people who had partied too hard inside.

Maybe Hookah should have had a grand re-opening party where they explained their new business model to the neighborhood. I am still really confused about their gimmick.

Was it TOO noisy, or just noisy? I mean, the buses and sanitation trucks are my biggest noise concern at that hour!

Ever see that awesome bit on Louis C.K.'s show about the sanitation guys? Like that.

Noisy or too noisy why do we want any business new or longtime playing music and partying all night until 8am. More objectivity please. Because that's obnoxious.

Anon 1:12~ so i take it you've personally been bothered by the noise?

If somebody throws garbage all over Flatbush I care even though it's not in front of my house. I don't need to be personally bothered because I care about my neighbors and about the quality of life in general in this neighborhood so if I hear a business, don't care who it is, new and hip or oldtimer, whatever doesn't matter, is playing audible music all night, I think it's a terrible thing to do to people. Even if neighbors hear it only a little, all night long? Seriously?

Throwing garbage is illegal. Having a party is not. Having one TOO LOUD is. Plus, they don't have one EVERY night. What do you actually know about the situation? Have you stopped in and talked to them? There were complaints about D'Avenue that we took seriously at the Community Board. Turned out it was one person, a fairly unstable one at that. And we were prepared to get super tough on it, and I'm glad we didn't. Richard took the complaints seriously though. He occasionally has rowdy parties though brought in by outside promoters. It may be time to have another talk.

My whole point of the post was to say - before you make a neighborhood business into a pariah, at least try to talk it through. You seem to take the side of "there is circumstantial evidence to suggest that Ali's is consistently bothering the neighborhood and doesn't GAF" This is precisely the sort of attitude that makes long-timers suspicious of newcomers.

And trust me, I have absolutely no tolerance for garbage dumpers and litterers. Although, living here, a certain level of Zen about it is practically required.

Just out of curiosity, what's the line for "too noisy"?

Clarkson FlatBed said...

I don't know. I don't live there.

It would seem that an attempt has been made to attenuate noise at ALL hours. Right now, this conversation seems to be taking place on the Isle of Conjecture.

Isle of Conjecture in the Straits of I-Don't-Know? :)

Fair enough, CF. I know we keep putting you in the spot of being spokesman, when you're really just spreading the news.

Kudos to Ali's for being proactive about this.
