The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Tragedy on Church Avenue

Word is coming off the wire of a six year old boy being shot on Church Avenue at East 18th Street. If you're one for prayer, now's the time.

As per the commenter below, victim was 59, despite multiple reports to the contrary off scanners and Spotcrime.

Wow, this the just the worst kind of blogging. Not only do you have the facts wrong, but you had every opportunity to verify and correct this, and didn't.

As near as I can tell, this "reporting" is of an initial police scanner report that occurred on Thursday the 14th -- more than 24 hours before you posted this entry -- and proved to be inaccurate.

If you would have spent the 30 seconds needed to do any verification of this, you would have found that, in fact, it was a 59-year-old man who was shot in the leg in front of a bodega at 10:30am (again, MORE THAN 24 HOURS before you posted your breaking news-style entry): http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_york&id=8993118&rss=rss-wabc-article-8993118

Still noteworthy to report? Definitely. But either get the facts straight or follow up on your original post with a timely correction.

Sorry this unpaid blogger hasn't lived up to your high standards. I was at work when the news hit my inbox. All I said was that the news hit the wire, which it in fact did.

Instead of simply correcting me, you took the opportunity to slam me. I'll leave your comment there to remind you what a jerk you are. Read it a few more times; maybe it will sink in.

Glad to hear it was ONLY a 59 year old dude.

Maybe anon can tell us how they found that info in 30 seconds. I searched the usual places for a news story and came up empty.

I think the way a blog should work is the post happens then people add there additions or corrections. Its not journalism its basically a bulletin board and I like that I can get news about the neighborhood quicker than otherwise.

Luckily the story of the 6 year old boy is not true. Unfortunately stories like this in our fine neighborhood are not far-fetched and could very well come true one day. This is why i want to see change in this neighborhood even if it means it needs to be gentrified to the nth degree! New developments, new gourmet supermarkets, and higher rents is what we need to push out the crime element from this neighborhood so we don't ever even have to speculate a story like this is true!!

For crying out loud this is a blog; not Associated Press!!! I get very valuable information from Q at Parkside and you don't have to search all over the place.

Why would Clarkson Flatbed state the following:

Glad to hear it was ONLY a 59 year old dude.

So, it wasn't the shooting itself that was disturbing. It was the incorrectly reported age of the victim that got to him, as he confirms with his mild expression of relief after learning the true age of the wounded man.

The victim was shot in the leg. Was the shooting the result of an accidental discharge? Bad aim. A confrontation? And shall we look into the race of the involved parties? After all, when legless Olympic champions are dispatching their girlfriends by shooting through bathroom doors, you never know what to expect when guns are involved.

Seriously, people? The Q does a great job of being open to reader commentary, correcting factual errors when they occur, and generally trying to get information out to our community asap. Much better than the "journalism" people seem to think is so much more accurate.

And footloose, I think there was (more than a little) sarcasm in the Q's comments about the age of the shooting vic. Come on...

The Q's dedication in delivering information has been instrumental in strengthening our community. His leadership has been unparrelled in raising awareness for our neighborhood, getting local officials attention, and inspiring others to get involved. Anon 8:01 AKA concerned neighbor, maybe you should put more of your misguided concern into solving the real issues and not attacking the author who is making positive changes everyday.

I live near the area. That bodega is a blight on that block. Has been for years. Too many derelicts hanging around on that spot. Also, there is a liquor store right next to the bodega. So you can get drunk and pop off a few rounds as well. SMH

The comments by concerned neighbor and footloose are too ridiculous to take seriously.

Q, please disregard and keep doing what you do. Many of us appreciate your work, time and energy.
