What are you doing today, Saturday, at noon? How about putting THIS on your agenda:
Dear Friends of Parkside,
Rain or shine or polar
vortex, this Saturday at noon, we're finally installing the tree guards
that will help our five new oaks survive the coming century. It'll be a
big fun messy job. So come on out!
- When: Saturday, January 11, at 12pm
- Where: 205 Parkside
- What: Installing tree guards, planting daffodils, general merriment
- Who: You. And your neighbors, your kids, and possibly your Borough President
Please dress warm, please bring garden shovels
if you've got them, and feel free to drop me a line to let me know if
we should expect you. We need all the help we can get.
Yours Truly, PARKSIDE COMMITTEE

isn't it too cold to plant daffodils? is the soil frozen?
Bulbs. Not Flowers. It hasn't been tundra cold. Only the top is frozen, and will thaw out tomorrow.
And if you need mulch for this project come down to Park Circle (at the tennis bubble end of Parkside Ave) for Prospect Park's Mulchfest. You can recycle your Christmas trees and wreaths and walk away with great smelling fresh mulch. (Just be sure to remove all ornaments and decorations.)
Mulchfest is Saturday and Sunday, 10AM until 2PM.
Diak:
We'd love some mulch. We probably need two or three wheelbarrows' worth, for the five tree pits we're handling. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it across the park? Aside from in the coat pockets of 500 volunteers?
On a similar note: If there are any mulch lovers out there with a car, or a wheelbarrow, and some spare time around noon tomorrow, please comment here!
Sorry, Rudy, but the deal with the mulch is generally whatever you can carry away... bring some tote bags, I guess.
But I didn't mean to imply you couldn't bring a wheelbarrow or two... as far as I know there's no limit to what you take away (within reason—I don't think they'd be OK with someone showing up with a pickup truck...)
I have rearranged plans and will be there with 2 shovels, some spades (if needed), inadequate rain gear, oh, and a car for mulch!
All this chatter out there brings tears to this old Amish man's eyes. I haven't been to a good barn raising in years! Go Parkside!
Hey, Naomi, thank you!
Diak, will you smooth things over for us, and warn the folks at the mulchfest that a car may be arriving from gentle Lefferts, in need of five tree-pits worth of mulch?
I'll be there tomorrow to help!
Rudy, I'll do whatever I can. I know most of people who run this thing. Two things to be aware of though:
if the weather is truly awful tomorrow — and the forecast is pretty bad— not as many people will show up with trees to chip so there might not be an oversupply of mulch (On the other hand, you won't have much competition for what there is.) Second, if it's set up as it has been in the past, you won't be able to drive into the park. You'll have to park in the circle (they arrange it up so this is doable and safe) and haul the mulch back. Depending on how they set it up this time, I'd guess it could be anywhere from 50-200 feet.
No worries, boys. There's always mulch a-plenty at Green-Wood Cemetery.
It's Saturday morning! See you on Parkside, folks.
So awesome to see such a great turnout, despite the weather! Wish I could have stayed to help. Down with colds :(
