The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Jane's Walk of South Crown Heights - Saturday

The Q's a big fan of the the never defatigable Mike Fagan at Brooklynian. He's leading one of these "Jane's Walks" that are happening all over the world in honor of longtime chimp activist and speedwalking enthusiast Jane Goodall, (who was also married to Robert Moses for a few harmonious years until they split over the proposed elevated highway project through Prospect Park). The point of these walks is to quickly spot as many Landmarks violations as you can, jot them down, and turn them in Stasi-style at the local "Jane's Office," a tastefully-marked turn-of-the-last-century one-family brownstone dripping with period details but with a thoroughly modern kitchen and bathroom hardware parquet floors and a whimsical master bedroom with mid-century wall paper.

Meet at the Bedford-Union Armory at, coincidentally, Bedford and Union.

Info on this walk and your tour guides

There will actually be 6 stops:

Stop 1:  Bedford Union Armory
Stop 2: Medgar Evers College
Stop 3: Ebbetts Field Apartments
Stop 4: Empire Boulevard
Stop 5: The Spice Factory
Stop 6: Sea Crest Laundry

I'm the "tour leader" for stop #5, the spice factory (aka the former Consumer Park brewery complex). I could use some friendly faces there --I know a lot about ournneighborhood--relatively little about Crown Heights (although I've done my homework for tomorrow).

We are a friendly bunch, Bob. Many attendees will come from all over the city, and learn about the walk from the Jane's Walk site.

I know that Mike, but it still would be nice if some neighbors from south of Empire were to come.

And cross the Mason-Dixon, Bob? Not on your life!

That's what I was afraid of Tim. Crown Heights is terra incgnita. My maps show dragons there

Jane Jacobs - not Jane Goodall!

I'm troubled, Anon, that you no doubt took longer to comment that to read the post carefully. However, now that we're talking...

About that bridge...

"Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect with neighbours."
These walks don't have anything to do with Jane Goodall. Might want to check your sources...

Anon: I've written about Jane Jacobs many times before. This is not the NY Times - this is a personal blog. Sometimes I take a piss. Sometimes I take many pisses. Sometimes, I just get silly.

Perhaps the next time you visit you'll bring your sense of the absurd. Or not. Your comments are making me feel bad for you, but not too much.

Some people have no sense of humor! But, truth to tell,
Q, your jokes are sometimes a bit au deuxième degré, comme on dit en français (tongue in cheek is the closest my brain can come up with in English). Write on!

I was one of the presenters. The tour was well-attended. Attendees had to be split into two groups.
