The Q at Parkside

(for those for whom the Parkside Q is their hometrain)

News and Nonsense from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Lefferts and environs, or more specifically a neighborhood once known as Melrose Park. Sometimes called Lefferts Gardens. Or Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Or PLG. Or North Flatbush. Or Caledonia (west of Ocean). Or West Pigtown. Across From Park Slope. Under Crown Heights. Near Drummer's Grove. The Side of the Park With the McDonalds. Jackie Robinson Town. Home of Lefferts Manor. West Wingate. Near Kings County Hospital. Or if you're coming from the airport in taxi, maybe just Flatbush is best.

Bluebird Cafe to Open Where DJ Oyster Didn't

Here's the poop on the Oyster. We knew, didn't we, that the name DJ Oyster would not stand up to scrutiny, especially after the Q's critical commenters weighed in. Bluebird Cafe has a nice ring to it, though I certainly hope that's not one of the main entree's. Oh what do I know, maybe Bluebirds are the new chicken in this crazy universe where cuisine is the new rock 'n' roll. Thanks to my spies, I'm able to bring this to you from 250 miles away as I sit on the steps of the town hall of tiny Sandgate, VT, so small it has no shops save the "Wayside" general store. This is the only internet for miles around, and cell phones don't reach us at the Corner House. And yet, I can't help but be drawn here to check up on y'all and wish Jim Mamary and his new bistro at 504 Flatbush a great run. In nearly a dozen years the refrains I've heard loudest have been that we need a good bistro (soon we'll have two, plus longtime cantina Lincoln Park) and a good coffee haus (we have three). But something tells me the complaints will keep on pouring like lemonade on a hot summer day. I guess if you're paying $1400 for a studio, things stick in your craw.

Thanks Mark S. for the Photo!

Well, I'm certainly excited! It's a hike for us on on the southern border of the hood, but that's a small price to pay for a real restaurant (or at least I hope that's what it'll be--i love coffee shops but they don't do me much good when i'm never home before 8pm)

This restaurant looks very cute. And what about the place with the new Cinnamon Girl sign that appears to be opening on Flatbush between Midwood and Rutland?

It looks like there's also a little cafe opening on Beekman, tucked behind the corner store and the laundromat. Not sure what it'll be called, but there was obvious coffee paraphernalia being moved in.

Bluebird got a shout-out in the Times today, though the neighborhood didn't (good thing?). Speaking of an experienced but down-on-his-luck BK restauranteur...

"Fifteen minutes later he was off to yet another person’s restaurant: Bluebird, on Flatbush Avenue, which Jimmy Mamary, his partner at Patois, expects to open this month. After double-parking his truck, Mr. Harding sat down at a table covered in construction dust to help his former colleague brainstorm items for his menu: potato-mushroom pierogies, molasses-smoked chicken wings, a pork belly B.L.T."

Checked BlueBird out recently & love it! I still hang out at Lincoln Pk Tavern but this is much nicer for a group gathering or to impress a special person. Food is good too - had their dumplings (tasty) but a little overpriced at $8....a train ride to Bayridge can get you more for $2. Am definitely going back - the fireplace will keep you warm .....if the spirits don't!
